Assistant Professor of New Testament
Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

Dr. John J. R. Lee has taught at MBTS since the fall of 2010 and currently serves as Associate Professor of New Testament, teaching Greek, New Testament, and other Biblical studies courses, and supervising Ph.D. dissertations. Dr. Lee’s research and writings have primarily been focused on the Gospels (especially Mark and Luke), Christology of the New Testament (especially the Gospels and Paul), early Jewish and Christian monotheism, and New Testament Greek. Lee has authored several books, including Christological Rereading of the Shema inMark’s Gospel (Mohr Siebeck).

Lee has also been working on several co-authored volumes, including a book exploring the meaning and significance of Mark 10:45, a so-called key verse of the Gospel (Lexham), and another book surveying Pauline Christology (IVP Academic). Additionally, Dr. Lee is preparing a guided practice workbook for second year and third year Greek students and is co-editing a volume on biblical justice. Lee has frequently been presenting conference papers at ETS and SBL.

Lee has graduated from Seoul National University (B.M.), The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div.), and the University of Edinburgh (Ph.D. in New Testament). His doctoral study at Edinburgh was combined with teaching at the King’s Evangelical Divinity School and research at Das Institut für antikes Judentum und hellenistische Religionsgeschichte, Tübingen University.

Dr. Lee has pastored in various English and Korean speaking contexts since 2001. Lee adores his wife, Sunny, and is incredibly proud of their son, Josh.
